Make Your Own Laundry Detergent

Love laundry? ā€¦ Didn't think so, but why choose natural laundry powder?
Many people experience itchy skin and often think their skin is dry or that they need to change body lotions or soaps. But if you're feeling itchy all over, the culprit could be your laundry detergent! Detergent residue left on your clothes can irritate sensitive skin, especially if you have allergies to certain ingredients. If your skin is extra sensitive, even a small amount of detergent left on your fabric can cause discomfort.
Hereā€™s how to make your own natural laundry detergent that is gentle on your skin and effective for your laundry.
Each batch makes around 5 cups, good for about 80 loads in a high-efficiency washer or 27 loads in a standard washer.**
What Youā€™ll Need:
- 1 box grater
- Measuring cups & spoons
- Rubber gloves
- A sealable container (glass or plastic)
- Wooden spoon
Materials:
- 1 box Borax
- 1 box washing soda (sodium carbonate)
- 1 box baking soda ( optional)
- 1 bar of pure soap or box of soap flakes (optional)
- Essential Oil (optional)
How to Make Homemade Laundry Detergent:
1. Grate the Bar Soap
- If using a bar of soap, grate it into flakes with a box grater. You can also use pre-made soap flakes.
- For scented detergent, choose a soap bar with your preferred fragrance that doesnā€™t contain skin conditioners.
2. Measure and Mix the Ingredients
- Combine 2 cups of Borax, 2 cups of washing soda, and 1 cup of soap flakes in a container with a tightly fitted lid.
- Mix well using a wooden spoon, and seal the container promptly.
- For added cleaning power, include 1 cup of baking soda in the mix.
Be sure to store the detergent in an airtight container to avoid clumping and keep it out of reach of children and pets.
How to Use Homemade Laundry Detergent:
For Standard Top-Load Washers:
- **Small Load:** 2 tablespoons or less
- **Medium Load:** 3 tablespoons
- **Large Load:** 1/4 cup
For Front Load and Top Load High-Efficiency Washers:
- **Small and Medium Loads:** 1 tablespoon
- **Large and Extra Large Loads:** 2-3 tablespoons
For Handwashing Clothes:
- Add 1 tablespoon of detergent to 1 cup of hot water to dissolve, then add the solution to a sink of warm or cool water before washing your clothes.
Tips for Best Results:
- **Hard Water Tip:** Add extra shredded goat milk soap or coconut soap for hard water areas, or include 1/2 cup of distilled white vinegar in the wash.
- **Smelly Clothes:** For extra smelly clothes, add 1 tablespoon of white vinegar to your load. This is particularly helpful for microfiber or fleece items, which tend to hold odors.
- **Fragrance:** For amazing-smelling laundry, add essential oils like Lavender, Peppermint, Lemongrass, or Tea Tree to your detergent. Not only do they smell great, but Tea Tree and Lemongrass oils also have antibacterial properties.
Enjoy your fresh, clean, and naturally-scented laundry without the worry of skin irritation!
